Nigeria’s Honey Manufacturer, Maryam Mahmud eye 20 Tonnes by 2030

Maryam Mahmud, a Zoology graduate of the University of Ilorin and Executive Director of Honeyz Depot, has unveiled an ambitious expansion plan aimed at scaling the company’s honey production operations.

Honeyz Depot, described as Kwara State’s largest honey distributor and operator of the state’s only exclusive walk-in honey store, has dominated honey distribution in the state for the past five years.

Mahmud, who also serves as the company’s lead beekeeper, is directly involved in managing its production operations and ensuring quality control throughout the process.

The company, which launched its honey production line three years ago, is now preparing to transition to semi-commercial production, targeting five tonnes of honey by 2026 and 20 tonnes annually by 2030.

Nigeria’s honey market was valued at approximately $63.21 million in 2024, with demand increasing across the food, pharmaceutical and personal care sectors. However, domestic production remains significantly below consumption levels, creating a substantial supply gap and increasing the country’s reliance on imports.

Speaking on the expansion, Mahmud said Honeyz Depot’s experience through its walk-in store, prior to its temporary shutdown, and its distribution network had demonstrated the growing demand for high-quality honey.

“Now, we are taking the next step, controlling production, ensuring traceability, and scaling responsibly to meet rising market demand.”

According to Mahmud, the company’s production roadmap will combine owned anchor apiaries with a structured network of outgrower beekeepers to ensure consistent quality, expand supply and reduce dependence on imported honey.

The initiative is also expected to create jobs, support rural livelihoods, strengthen pollination services and promote sustainable beekeeping practices.

With the planned expansion, Honeyz Depot aims not only to strengthen its position in Kwara State’s honey market but also to establish a stronger presence in Nigeria’s wider honey industry.
