CBN Auctions N700bn Treasury Bills in Final August Sale

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is set to auction N700 billion worth of Treasury Bills today, August 26, in its second and final auction for the month.

The auction comprises N100 billion in 91-day bills, N100 billion in 182-day bills and N500 billion in 364-day bills.

At the previous auction on August 12, investors submitted bids worth N4.4 trillion for the N700 billion offered, reflecting strong demand for government securities.

The 364-day bills attracted the highest interest, with subscriptions reaching N4.19 trillion. The CBN subsequently allotted about N1.46 trillion, exceeding the initial offer, while the stop rate on the 364-day bills rose from 17.35 per cent to 17.59 per cent.

Market participants will closely watch today’s results for signals on investor appetite for government securities and the direction of short-term interest rates.

Particular attention is expected on the 364-day bills, as investors assess whether the CBN will sustain the higher yield recorded at the last auction or resume the rate reductions seen throughout July.

The auction is part of the CBN’s N5.8 trillion Treasury Bills issuance programme for the third quarter of 2026.
