The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has intensified the demolition of buildings and other structures erected on waterways and erosion paths across the nation’s capital.

The exercise follows a directive by FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, last week for the removal of houses built on waterways after heavy flooding hit parts of Abuja on August 16.

The downpour submerged several areas, including Wuse 2, particularly Adetokunbo Ademola Crescent, as well as communities around Delight Event Centre in Gudu and Efab Estate in Lokogoma.

Several vehicles were trapped in floodwaters, while the bridge linking Gaduwa and Durumi was also heavily flooded, leaving motorists stranded and disrupting movement.

Photos shared online showed buildings already demolished by the authorities, as well as ongoing demolition operations in some locations.

The FCTA said the enforcement is aimed at clearing waterways and other vulnerable areas to reduce the risk of flooding and protect lives and property across the capital.
