A 42-year-old Nigerian woman, Bilikesu Olagunju, has admitted to abusing an elderly man she was supposed to be caring for in the UK. The disturbing incident was captured on CCTV inside the pensioner’s home.
Olagunju, who lives on Congress Road in Abbey Wood, was working as a care worker when the abuse happened. She was seen on camera forcefully grabbing the elderly man and dragging him around the house.
She appeared at Woolwich Crown Court on Wednesday, May 7, where she pleaded guilty to ill-treating or neglecting the man while acting as his caregiver.
However, the court could not proceed with sentencing because she arrived without a lawyer. As a result, the judge postponed the sentencing to a later date in June.
Olagunju has been granted bail and will return to the same court for her sentencing next month.
This case has raised concerns about how vulnerable elderly people are treated, even by those paid to look after them. It also highlights the importance of using CCTV to protect those who cannot protect themselves.
Judge Charlotte Welsh told Olagunju: “You have no representation. It’s entirely your choice but I think it’s really important you get a solicitor – they’ll help you apply for legal aid and you won’t have to pay.
“I know you’re very worried and I don’t want to frighten you but this is a very serious offence and you should have someone representing you.”
