A 78-year-old British woman sadly lost her life after becoming ill while swimming in a hotel pool in Hersonissos, Crete, Greece.
The woman, whose name has not been made public, was pulled from the water but could not be saved. She was confirmed dead at the scene.
Greek police have launched an investigation into what happened. Three people — two hotel staff members aged 51 and 41, and a 21-year-old lifeguard who was meant to be on duty — were taken in for questioning. They have since been released on bail while the case is being looked into.
This tragic event adds to a recent series of similar incidents involving British tourists abroad. On July 29, a 52-year-old British man drowned in a hotel swimming pool in Majorca, near the famous Love Island villa.
Emergency responders, including an air ambulance, were sent to the BJ Playa Blanca Hotel, located between the beaches of S’Illot and Sa Coma. The man was found floating face down in the water and was declared dead shortly after being pulled out.
