SDP expels El-Rufai, bans ex-Gov for 30 years

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has expelled former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, and placed a 30-year ban on him from participating in any activities related to the party.

The decision was announced by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), which said it acted in line with the SDP’s constitution, principles, and values. The NWC also referenced the Nigerian Constitution and Electoral Act, which give political parties full control over who they accept or reject as members.

In a statement issued by the party’s spokesperson, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, the SDP warned all members to stay away from El-Rufai and others who do not represent the party’s interests.

The statement made it clear that El-Rufai is banned from applying for membership or identifying with the party in any form. This includes the use of the party’s name, logo, symbols, support, donations, or involvement in any of its activities. The ban takes effect immediately and will last for 30 years.

El-Rufai had earlier joined the SDP after leaving the All Progressives Congress (APC), where he served as a prominent figure and two-term governor. However, he is now actively involved in an opposition alliance that recently adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its political platform ahead of the 2027 elections.

The SDP’s action appears to be a move to protect its image and distance itself from political figures whose actions may not align with its values and direction.
