The All Progressives Congress (APC) has responded to growing speculation over a recent meeting between former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, former Cross River State Governor Donald Duke, and others. The meeting, which took place in Abeokuta, Ogun State, raised questions about possible political alliances forming for the upcoming 2027 general elections.
The discussions, which reportedly focused on Nigeria’s political future, have led to rumors of a possible challenge to President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid. However, the APC has made it clear that it is not worried by these developments.
Bala Ibrahim, the APC’s National Publicity Director, dismissed the meeting as irrelevant to Tinubu’s political standing. Ibrahim emphasized that Tinubu is far ahead of figures like Obasanjo, Kwankwaso, Obi, and Duke in terms of contemporary Nigerian politics. He noted that these figures, who were all defeated in the last elections, do not pose any serious challenge to the APC’s position.
Ibrahim also reminded critics that Obasanjo’s past endorsements have often failed. He cited Obasanjo’s support for former President Goodluck Jonathan, who lost to Muhammadu Buhari, and for Peter Obi, who also lost in the last election to Tinubu. Ibrahim’s point was that no matter how many meetings these politicians hold, they cannot change the political reality.
The APC has expressed confidence in Tinubu’s leadership, reinforcing the belief that there will be no threat to the government’s control heading into the 2027 elections. The party remains resolute, stating that opposition efforts will not succeed in shifting the balance of power.
