Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has announced that the last Saturday of every January will be observed as Igbo Adoration and Thanksgiving Day. The organization called on churches in Igbo land and the diaspora to participate in the day as a unifying spiritual event for the Igbo nation.
The decision followed a request by the Igbo College of Bishops, which asked the National Executive Committee (NEC) of Ohanaeze to shift the observance from Sunday to Saturday. The bishops wanted to avoid conflict with regular church services, sending a delegation that included Archbishop David Onuoha of the Owerri Anglican Province and Archbishop Sosthenes Eze of the Enugu Anglican Province. The NEC approved the appeal and reversed the earlier Sunday resolution.
Ohanaeze President-General, Azuta Mbata, urged Ndigbo at home and abroad to recognize the importance of the day as a collective moment of gratitude to God for His enduring mercies despite decades of challenges. The maiden edition of the Igbo Adoration and Thanksgiving Day is scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
Mbata called on all churches to participate through prayers, adoration, and thanksgiving, emphasizing that the day should serve as a unifying spiritual landmark for the Igbo nation. He encouraged Ndigbo worldwide to join wholeheartedly in observing the new national day.
