Irate mob sets ablaze house with suspected stolen motorcycles, other items in Benue

Tension rose in Benue State after an angry mob set a house on fire following the discovery of suspected stolen motorcycles and other valuables inside the building. According to eyewitnesses, residents had long suspected that the house was being used to store stolen property. When the items were reportedly found, the crowd reacted violently, leading to the destruction of the building.

Witnesses say the mob stormed the compound, bringing out motorcycles, electronics, and other objects believed to have been stolen. Instead of waiting for security operatives to intervene, the aggrieved residents set the house ablaze, insisting they were tired of rising theft cases in their community. The fire quickly spread, destroying the property before firefighters could arrive.

Security officials later visited the scene and condemned the mob action, warning that taking the law into one’s hands only worsens insecurity. They noted that suspects must be handed over to the police for proper investigation and prosecution. Authorities have also begun an inquiry to identify those involved in the incident and to verify the true owners of the recovered items.

Community leaders are calling for calm, urging residents to allow the police handle criminal cases going forward. They stressed that mob justice often leads to wrongful accusations and further violence. The police have assured the public that measures are being put in place to reduce theft and improve safety across the area.
