The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reportedly warned that the 2027 general election could face postponement if the ongoing Ebola outbreak spreads significantly across the country.
The Director-General of the agency, Jide Idris, was reported to have said that a widespread outbreak could compel the Federal Government to consider postponing the elections as part of measures to protect public health.
The development comes as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general election, with political parties and prospective candidates already beginning preparations and campaign activities ahead of the polls.
Concerns over the outbreak have added a public health dimension to the country’s electoral preparations, particularly regarding the safety of voters, candidates, election officials and other participants in the electoral process.
However, any decision to postpone the election would require official clarification from the relevant authorities, and no postponement should be considered confirmed without a formal announcement.
The situation underscores the importance of effective disease surveillance, containment measures and timely public communication as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general election.
