The American actor and TV host shared that his decision was less about planning and more connected to struggles from his past.
Speaking in a recent interview, Cannon admitted fatherhood was linked to unresolved pain.
The 43-year-old said on The Breakfast Club that he now understands having so many kids was partly his way of dealing with trauma.
He explained how his lifestyle after divorce led him to make careless choices.
Instead of slowing down and focusing on healing, he admitted that his wealth, access, and freedom made it easy for him to move around without thinking deeply about the future.
Cannon said it wasn’t a plan to have 12 kids, but rather living freely.
He shared that at the time, he only wanted to enjoy life, and whatever came his way, he felt he could handle it. Looking back at almost 45, he said if he had paused and thought things through, his choices might have been different.
Still, Cannon believes his kids were born out of love.
He insisted that every child came from love and meaningful relationships. However, he admitted that not taking time to heal caused him to pass on trauma instead of fixing it.
On monogamy, Cannon said his views remain the same.
When asked if his thoughts on being with one partner had changed, he explained that monogamy was never his way. Growing up in an unusual family setting made him see love in different ways.
