A bill advocating for the establishment of a new state in Nigeria’s South-East region has successfully passed through the second reading at the House of Representatives. The legislation, co-sponsored by lawmakers from Abia, Imo, Ebonyi, Anambra, and Enugu states, proposes the formation of a state to be named Etiti. This new state would be created by redefining boundaries from existing states and would comprise 11 local government areas (LGAs), including Aninri, Awgu, Isuikwuato, Ivo, Oji-River, Ohaozara, Okigwe, Onuimo, Orumba North, Orumba South, and Umu-Nneochi.

According to Amobi Ogah, one of the bill’s sponsors from Abia, the initiative aims to address long-standing issues of regional parity and administrative efficiency within the South-East. He emphasized that establishing Etiti state would not only enhance governance but also align with principles of equity and inclusivity in Nigeria’s democracy. The bill received significant support during the parliamentary session, where it was voted for through a voice vote led by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.

The bill, which was initially introduced on July 2, underscores the aspirations of the South-Eastern region for equitable representation and socio-economic development. Supporters argue that creating Etiti state is a crucial step towards balanced regional development and effective governance, responding to the long-awaited needs of the people in the area.
