Breaking News: INEC Declares Date for Anambra Governorship Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially announced the date for the Anambra governorship election, a crucial event in Nigeria’s political landscape. During a recent meeting with political party representatives at INEC headquarters in Abuja, the national chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, revealed that the election is set for Saturday, November 8, 2025.

The last governorship election in Anambra State took place on November 6, 2021, which means that the upcoming election is timely, as elections typically occur every four years. This election is not just important for the state; it will also play a significant role in shaping the political future of Nigeria.

INEC has outlined a series of important dates leading up to the election:

The official notice announcing the election will be published on November 13, 2024. This notice is a legal requirement and must be issued 360 days before the election.

Political parties will conduct their primaries to select candidates from March 20, 2025, to April 10, 2025. This period is crucial as it allows parties to determine who will represent them in the election.

The nomination portal will open at 9:00 AM on April 18, 2025, and close at 6:00 PM on May 12, 2025. After this, INEC will release the final list of candidates on June 9, 2025.

Official campaigning by political parties will commence on June 11, 2025, and conclude at midnight on November 6, 2025. This gives parties a window to engage with voters and present their platforms.

Voters will have the opportunity to cast their ballots in all 5,720 polling units across Anambra State on November 8, 2025. This is the day when citizens will exercise their democratic rights.

In addition to announcing the election date, INEC plans to provide detailed information on other electoral activities in the coming weeks. This will include:

Information on how new voters can register to vote, which is essential for ensuring broad participation in the electoral process.

Guidelines on how voters can change their polling locations if they have moved since the last election.

Instructions for replacing lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), ensuring that all eligible voters can participate.
