Nearly 100 people are still missing in North Carolina weeks after Hurricane Helene caused widespread destruction. Governor Roy Cooper reported that 92 individuals are unaccounted for, but he cautioned that this number may change as rescue teams continue their efforts.

The hurricane has resulted in 95 deaths in North Carolina alone, contributing to over 220 fatalities across the region, including Florida, where the storm initially made landfall. Helene unleashed heavy rain that destroyed towns, homes, and bridges, particularly in the mountainous areas of the state.

Governor Cooper also addressed the issue of misinformation related to the disaster. He noted that false information can create confusion and demoralize both survivors and rescue workers. He urged people to stop spreading rumors that hinder recovery efforts, including unfounded claims about land confiscation and aid distribution.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has had to adjust its operations in North Carolina and even temporarily withdrew from one county due to threats stemming from these rumors. Recently, a man was arrested in Rutherford County for allegedly threatening relief workers while armed.

Rescue operations have been especially difficult because of the rugged terrain in western North Carolina. The popular tourist city of Asheville was cut off due to flooding. Helene brought more than six months’ worth of rain in just a few days, leaving many areas in ruins.

As recovery efforts continue, officials are working hard to locate the missing and support those affected by this devastating storm.
