The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has urged young Nigerians to take agriculture and agribusiness seriously as the country continues to battle food insecurity. The scheme noted that farming and food production offer huge opportunities for youths to build sustainable careers while supporting Nigeria’s economic growth. According to NYSC, agribusiness is no longer only about farming but includes processing, packaging, distribution, and marketing of agricultural products.
NYSC officials explained that Nigeria has fertile land and abundant natural resources that, if properly used, can produce enough food for everyone. They stressed that youth involvement in agriculture is essential to reducing food shortage and high food prices. The corps also encouraged young people to see agriculture as a profitable venture where they can become employers instead of waiting for office jobs.
The organization highlighted its Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, which trains corps members in various agricultural fields like fish farming, poultry, crop cultivation, and agro-processing. According to the NYSC, many former corps members have already started successful agribusiness ventures after their training, proving that agriculture can be a strong employment path.
However, NYSC appealed for more support from government agencies, private companies, and financial institutions to help young farmers with funding, equipment, and modern farming tools. It noted that many passionate youths lack the capital and access to farm technology needed to succeed on a larger scale. The corps believes that with the right support system, Nigeria’s agriculture sector can grow rapidly and reduce dependence on food imports.
NYSC encouraged Nigerian youths to embrace agriculture not only as a means of survival but as a strategic business opportunity. They added that food security is now a national priority and young people must take the lead in building a stronger food system. The corps urged youths to be innovative, learn modern farming methods, and explore agribusiness opportunities.
