Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has suspended the Rector and Bursar of the Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku, over alleged administrative misconduct and financial irregularities. The suspension, which will last six months, is seen as part of the governor’s efforts to strengthen accountability and curb mismanagement within the state’s tertiary institutions.
The decision, taken in the Governor’s capacity as Visitor to the Polytechnic, also includes the ratification of the earlier suspension of the Registrar, which had been approved by the school’s Governing Council. The move marks a major shake-up in the management of the institution, signaling the administration’s determination to promote transparency and good governance.
According to a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Kingsley Eze Emu, the suspension aims to enable a thorough and unbiased investigation into the allegations against the affected officials. “The measure is to allow for a transparent and independent inquiry into issues bordering on administrative lapses and financial breaches as reported by the Governing Council,” the statement read.
Pending the outcome of the investigation, the Governor directed that the Deputy Rector should take over as Acting Rector, while the most senior accountant in the bursary department will serve as Acting Bursar. The temporary leadership change is expected to ensure the smooth running of the institution during the investigation period.
Governor Oborevwori’s decision has been widely interpreted as part of his administration’s zero-tolerance stance on corruption and financial mismanagement in public institutions. It also sends a strong message that accountability and ethical conduct remain top priorities in his government.
