Former England international David James has praised Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, naming him the best shot-stopper in the English Premier League (EPL). James described Sanchez as an “outstanding” player who could become the foundation of Chelsea’s title ambitions this season.
Sanchez, who joined Chelsea from Brighton & Hove Albion in a £25 million deal, faced criticism last season after a series of costly errors. However, his performances this season have earned him renewed respect from analysts and former players alike. According to James, the Spaniard has significantly improved his distribution and decision-making on the ball, helping Chelsea transition quickly from defence to attack.
In an interview with Metro, David James said, “There are many top goalkeepers in the Premier League—David Raya, Alisson Becker, and Donnarumma—but the one I’d pick right now is Robert Sanchez. He’s been exceptional. His long passes are accurate, his reflexes sharp, and he’s playing with confidence.”
James emphasized that Sanchez’s composure and skill with the ball make him a vital part of Chelsea’s game plan under their current manager. “I think Sanchez will be the foundation for Chelsea’s challenge for the title this season. He’s shown leadership and consistency, two qualities every big team needs in a goalkeeper,” he added.
As Chelsea prepares to face newly promoted Sunderland after a strong 5-1 victory over Ajax in Europe, Sanchez’s form will be key to maintaining momentum. The Blues currently sit fifth in the Premier League table and are eager to climb higher as the season progresses.
