Anambra election: ‘All eyes on you’ – Accord charges new INEC boss on free, fair polls

The Accord Party has called on the newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, to conduct himself with fairness and integrity as he assumes leadership of the electoral body. The party emphasized that all eyes are on him as he oversees the upcoming Anambra governorship election scheduled for November 8, 2025.

In a statement signed by its National Chairman, Barrister Maxwell Mgbudem, the party congratulated Amupitan on his appointment, describing it as well-deserved given his record as a respected academic, legal luminary, and administrator. The Accord Party urged him to remain impartial and committed to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy through credible elections.

The party reminded the new INEC chief that his first major test would be the Anambra governorship election, where Nigerians expect a free, fair, and transparent process. “Citizens want their votes to count. The new leadership must ensure adequate preparation and address any logistical challenges to restore faith in the electoral process,” the statement read.

Accord also encouraged Amupitan to build on the innovations of his predecessor, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, while introducing new measures that will enhance voter confidence and minimize post-election disputes. The party stressed the need for collaboration with political parties and other stakeholders to ensure a smooth electoral process.

“The credibility of the Anambra election will define the future of Nigeria’s democracy and shape confidence in subsequent polls,” Accord added. “INEC must remain neutral and provide a level playing field for all candidates.” The party urged Professor Amupitan to demonstrate leadership that will strengthen democratic institutions and uphold the integrity of elections in Nigeria.
