Tinubu govt yet to comply with orders freeing Nnamdi Kanu – Ejimakor

Human rights lawyer and counsel to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, Aloy Ejimakor, has criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for failing to comply with multiple court rulings ordering Kanu’s release.

Ejimakor, in a post shared on his official X handle on Friday, questioned why the Federal Government continues to hold Kanu in detention despite several court judgments delivered in his favor since 2022. He described the ongoing detention as a clear violation of the rule of law and judicial independence.

According to Ejimakor, courts had on different occasions ruled for Kanu’s freedom and awarded damages for his unlawful arrest and detention. He stated that in January 2022, a court ordered the Federal Government to pay Kanu ₦1 billion and issue a public apology. Later, in October 2022, another court nullified Kanu’s detention and awarded him ₦500 million in compensation, while in October 2023, a separate judgment overturned the proscription of IPOB.

Ejimakor accused the government of deliberately ignoring these rulings, asking if the IPOB leader had become Tinubu’s “personal prisoner.” He insisted that justice must be served and urged the president to respect judicial decisions by releasing Kanu immediately.

The prolonged detention of Nnamdi Kanu has continued to generate widespread debate and tension, especially in the South-East region, where many have called for his unconditional release as a step toward peace and reconciliation.
