Political affairs analyst, Jerry Chukwueke, has said that the Obidient Movement, made up of supporters of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is not driven by political parties but by personalities who represent competence and integrity.
Chukwueke made this statement during an interview on The Morning Brief on Channels Television, while discussing the expectations surrounding the newly confirmed INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan. He explained that the Obidient supporters are focused on individuals they believe can bring meaningful change rather than being loyal to any political party structure.
“The Obidients actually don’t follow parties; they follow individuals. It’s about where they perceive a performer is in place to deliver transformation,” Chukwueke said. His remarks reflect a growing trend in Nigerian politics, where citizens, especially young people, are becoming more interested in personality-driven politics rather than traditional party loyalty.
The analyst added that this shift signifies a maturing political consciousness among Nigerians, emphasizing performance and accountability over political affiliations. He also highlighted that movements like the Obidients could influence how politicians campaign and connect with voters ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Chukwueke’s statement comes as discussions continue about INEC’s credibility and leadership under Prof. Amupitan, with many Nigerians hoping for an electoral process that reflects the will of the people and strengthens democracy in the country.
