Brazil legend, Zico names Africa’s greatest player of all time

Brazilian football legend, Zico, has declared former Super Eagles captain, Austin ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha, as the greatest African footballer of all time. The football icon made this remark during his appearance on John Obi Mikel’s Obi One Podcast on Thursday.

Zico, known for his own brilliance and creativity on the pitch, said he has always admired Okocha’s unique style of play, describing him as a fantastic and skillful number 10. He praised the Nigerian legend’s flair, creativity, and ability to entertain fans while maintaining effectiveness on the field.

When asked by Mikel who he considers the greatest African player, Zico said, “I like Okocha — a fantastic player. Number 10, Okocha. Eto’o, fantastic. George Weah, Drogba.” His comments reflect the global respect Okocha still commands decades after retiring from football.

Zico also reaffirmed that his countryman, Pelé, remains the greatest footballer of all time, citing the Brazilian legend’s record and influence on the global game. Nonetheless, his admiration for Okocha highlighted the Nigerian’s impact beyond African football.

Jay-Jay Okocha, now 52 years old, represented Nigeria 73 times, scoring 14 goals and delighting fans worldwide with his dazzling dribbles and trademark creativity. His career remains a source of pride for African football enthusiasts.
