Vietnam returnee k!lled in Abia communal clash

A Nigerian man based in Vietnam, Samson Nwaubani, has lost his life during a violent clash between the Okwu and Umuajata communities in Umuahia, Abia State.

The incident happened on Tuesday, August 27, during the annual New Yam festival in Olokoro. Trouble started after a disagreement between a resident of Umuajata and someone from Okwu, which later turned into a serious fight.

Reports say the violence escalated when angry youths from Okwu allegedly invaded Umuajata, destroying some houses and properties in the community.

On the day of the festival, Samson and some Okwu youths were passing through Umuajata on their way to the celebration grounds when they were suddenly ambushed by suspected Umuajata youths.

According to eyewitnesses, Samson was attacked during the clash. He was stabbed in the neck, macheted on the arm, and collapsed on the spot, bleeding to death before help could reach him.

One of the sources explained that the festival usually holds in different stages. The fight broke out during one of those stages when Okwu youths clashed with Umuajata members. Samson became a victim while trying to get to the festival venue.

Another source revealed that the fight was linked to a long-standing land and boundary dispute between the two communities.

Elders had earlier tried to resolve the issue and even warned the youths against violence.

Sadly, the warnings were ignored, leading to Samson’s death and injuries to others during the ambush.
