A huge landslide has destroyed a village in western Sudan, killing about 1,000 people. Only one person survived the disaster, making it one of the deadliest natural events in the country’s recent history.

The tragedy took place on Sunday, August 31, in Tarasin village, located in the Marrah Mountains of Central Darfur. Heavy rains over several days triggered the landslide, the Sudan Liberation Movement-Army said in an official statement.

According to early reports, every resident of the village, estimated at over 1,000 people, died. The rebel group confirmed that just a single person survived the catastrophic event.

The village was completely destroyed, leaving nothing behind. The Sudan Liberation Movement-Army has asked the United Nations and international aid organizations to help recover the bodies and provide assistance to the affected area.

Footage from Marrah Mountains news showed a flattened landscape between mountain ranges, with people searching through the debris for survivors and victims.
