The victims were reportedly taken while traveling by boat on the Isaka River, which is located in the Okrika area of Rivers State.
Reports say the kidnapped people were on their way to Bille Town in Degema when it happened.
According to Leadership Newspaper, the group was traveling to Bille Town in Degema Local Government Area when they were attacked on Tuesday evening.
The pirates also took two other boats carrying goods to other river towns.
In addition to kidnapping passengers, the attackers also hijacked two boats filled with goods. These boats were headed to Cawthorne Channel and Bonny Island, both located within Rivers State.
A union leader confirmed the incident.
Israel Pepple, who is the Chairman of the Maritime Workers Union in Rivers State, confirmed the attack and the abduction.
“12 boat passengers and their driver are under captivity right now. Other two boats were hijacked. Three boats, one is going to Cawthorne Channel, one is going to Bille and one is going to Bonny.
The one going to Bille was the one they captured the boat, the driver and the passengers. The other ones, they only captured the boat and the goods and chased away the drivers.”
