2027 elections: PDP trembles over Kano, Delta defections as decampees dismiss discrimination fear

As the countdown to Nigeria’s 2027 general elections begins, the political scene is experiencing significant shifts. Recently, key political figures have defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), setting the stage for intense competition. These defections, particularly from Delta State and Kano, could impact the race in surprising ways.

PDP Faces Pressure in Delta and Kano

Delta State, a traditional stronghold for the PDP, has seen a wave of defections to the APC. Influential politicians, including legislators and grassroots leaders, cited dissatisfaction with the party’s leadership at both state and national levels. These defections have weakened the PDP’s influence in the Niger Delta, a key region known for its voter population and oil wealth. The APC is now gaining ground in a region that was once difficult to penetrate.

In Kano, former senior aide to President Buhari, AbdulRahman Kawu Sumaila, moved from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the APC. Sumaila, a significant figure in Kano South, is seen as a major asset for the APC. His defection is considered a blow to the NNPP, which had hoped to make a strong impact in the region.

Reactions from Key Figures

Abdullahi Ganduje, the APC National Chairman, welcomed Sumaila’s defection, praising him as a “grassroots general” who would strengthen the party in Kano. However, Ganduje also warned that the party must reward loyalty to avoid future defections.

On the other hand, Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s presidential hopeful for 2027, acknowledged the defections but urged party members to remain united. He promised reforms to address internal divisions, but some members believe the PDP is struggling to regain its strength after these losses.

Internal Struggles for the PDP

The acting PDP National Chairman, Umar Damagum, took a diplomatic approach in response to the defections. While he condemned the moves as acts of betrayal, he avoided harsh criticism, blaming “external manipulations” for the losses. This soft approach suggests the PDP leadership is trying to avoid further defections while working behind the scenes to heal the divisions.

Looking Ahead to 2027

The recent defections are not isolated incidents but early signs of realignments ahead of the 2027 elections. Experts believe the APC is making strategic moves in Delta and Kano to challenge the PDP’s dominance in these key regions. For the PDP, these defections are a warning. Without internal reforms and unity, the party risks entering the 2027 race weakened from within.

The 2027 elections are still years away, but the political moves being made now are crucial. The party that can manage its internal dynamics and forge strong alliances will have the upper hand when the election finally arrives.
