FCT Rotary Clubs, AEPB Sensitize Wuse Market Traders On Chemical Preservatives

Over 40 Rotary Clubs in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), in partnership with the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB), have started a campaign at Wuse Market to teach traders and buyers about the dangers of using chemicals to preserve beans and other food items.

Rotarian Rabi Mohammed, President of Rotary Club Abuja Urban, said the project is part of Rotary’s 2024-2025 plans. The main goal is to reduce health risks by encouraging people to avoid chemical preservatives and choose safer methods instead.

She explained that using harmful chemicals to keep food fresh can lead to serious health problems like kidney and liver diseases, food poisoning, and even cancer. Rotary, with support from the AEPB, wants to help the public understand the importance of natural and safe food preservation.

The team is also pushing for a ban on harmful chemicals used in preserving food. They are offering alternatives like reusable bags and airtight containers to help people move to healthier options.

Kate Ogbonna, from the AEPB, said they are working hard to spread awareness in communities and markets. She mentioned that chemical preservatives can cause many health issues including numbness, heart attacks, and even death.

Rotarian Oro-ghene Adia, Project Director for the initiative, highlighted that markets like Wuse are key places to spread this message. He encouraged traders to store food in airtight containers, keep food in dry, cool places, or freeze food instead of using chemicals.

This joint effort between the Rotary Clubs and AEPB is meant to create a healthier environment and help people make better choices for their health.
