President Donald Trump has announced that the U.S. will soon introduce a major tariff on imported pharmaceutical products. He shared this news during a speech at a National Republican Congressional Committee event, saying the goal is to push drug companies to shift their operations to the United States.
Trump explained that by putting tariffs on medicines made overseas, companies will be more likely to leave countries like China and start producing in the U.S., since most of their sales come from American customers.
Although he didn’t include medicines in the recent tariffs announced last week, Trump has hinted before that imported drugs would eventually face new taxes. Back in February, he mentioned that these tariffs could start at 25% and may go even higher.
However, some experts warn that adding tariffs to imported medicines could lead to higher prices for consumers.
Trump also believes that these tariffs will help Republicans win big in the 2026 midterm elections. He claimed that the tariffs are a positive move and predicted a “legendary” win for his party.
Meanwhile, the White House confirmed that starting Wednesday, tariffs on Chinese goods will rise to 104%. Trump has also announced an additional 50% tariff on top of previous levies, following China’s decision to respond with its own 34% tax.
