A former Commissioner for Finance in Oyo State, Mr. Waheed Akanbi, has paid tribute to the late Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, describing him as a rare gem who helped shape future leaders and strengthened many educational institutions in Nigeria.
Dr. Olunloyo, who briefly served as Governor of the old Oyo State from October to December 1983, passed away early Sunday morning. Despite his short time in office, his leadership and vision made a lasting impact.
In a statement, Akanbi praised Olunloyo’s academic excellence and contributions to fields like applied mathematics and number theory. He also highlighted how Olunloyo’s work as an educator and intellectual helped many young leaders grow and how he supported schools across the country.
“Dr. Olunloyo will always be remembered in academic circles,” Akanbi said. “He was a man full of knowledge in both modern and traditional science. He could see the future and spoke with clarity and wisdom.”
Akanbi recalled a personal moment when Olunloyo’s advice helped him avoid danger during a tense political period. “He once called me at 3 a.m. during the Ladoja impeachment crisis and warned me to avoid the Secretariat. His advice helped me stay safe that day.”
Even though he feels the loss deeply, Akanbi said he won’t mourn with tears but instead celebrate Olunloyo’s life with a cold bottle of beer, just as the jovial late governor would have wanted.
“Sleep well, Baba. May your soul rest in peace,” he added.
