Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has taken legal action against fellow senator, Onyekachi Nwaebonyi, over alleged defamatory remarks. She filed a ₦5 billion lawsuit at the High Court in Abuja, accusing him of making false and damaging statements about her during TV interviews in March 2025.
According to her legal team, led by M.J. Numa, SAN, Senator Nwaebonyi made harmful comments on Channels Television and Arise News. He reportedly called her names like “gold digger,” “habitual liar,” and “habitual blackmailer” during a March 6 interview on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily.
In another interview on Arise News on March 3, he allegedly claimed that Senator Natasha was “a mother of six from different men.” Her lawyers say these comments were meant to damage her image and reputation, especially as a woman in politics.
The case also includes a video from News Central TV posted on YouTube on March 27. In the video, Nwaebonyi allegedly said Natasha’s marriage was due to blackmail and that she once asked her husband for ₦10 billion. He also reportedly accused her of lying about being sexually harassed by a former presidential aide.
Senator Natasha says these statements caused her emotional pain and damaged her public image. She is asking the court for ₦5 billion in compensation.
She also wants a public apology and a retraction of the statements in major newspapers and media outlets. Additionally, she is requesting a court order to stop Nwaebonyi and his associates from making similar remarks in the future.
The case has not yet been scheduled for hearing, but Senator Nwaebonyi is expected to respond within 21 days of receiving the court papers.
