South Korea: Ousted president Yoon loses reckless gamble with martial law – Former colleagues

South Korea’s former president, Yoon Suk Yeol, has been removed from office after taking a risky political step that went too far. Yoon, who once worked as a strong and well-known prosecutor, became president in 2022. He was known for making bold decisions and taking chances, but his latest move backfired.

On December 3, Yoon briefly declared martial law without proper reason. This act was seen as a violation of the country’s constitution. The Constitutional Court supported the parliament’s decision to impeach him, officially ending his time as president. He was removed in the third year of his five-year term.

Yoon is now facing a criminal trial. He is accused of trying to take control of the military to shut down a parliament led by the opposition. He claimed he did it to protect South Korea from what he called “anti-state forces,” but many disagreed with his reasoning.

One of Yoon’s former colleagues, Han Dong-soo, said Yoon used his career as a prosecutor to rise to power. He led investigations into powerful political figures, which gained him public support and helped him become president.

However, Yoon’s time in office was not smooth. There were several scandals, including one involving his wife, Kim Keon Hee. She was accused of accepting an expensive Christian Dior handbag as a gift, which raised ethical concerns.

Yoon’s story shows how political risks can lead to big falls, even for leaders who once seemed unstoppable.
