South Korea: Finally, court removes President Yoon

South Korea’s President Yoon Suk Yeol has been officially removed from office by the Constitutional Court. This decision came after the court supported the parliament’s vote to impeach him. The main reason for his removal was his decision to briefly impose martial law last year, which led to South Korea’s biggest political crisis in many years.

Now that Yoon is no longer president, the country must hold a new presidential election within 60 days, as required by the Constitution. Until then, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo will take over as acting president.

According to Acting Chief Justice Moon Hyung-bae, President Yoon went beyond his powers and damaged democracy. He said Yoon’s decision to declare martial law caused problems in many areas, including society, the economy, and foreign relations. The Chief Justice also said that Yoon betrayed the trust of the people.

Many citizens celebrated the court’s decision. Thousands gathered at a rally, and when the news broke, people cheered and chanted “We won!”

This ruling ends months of political unrest and comes during a time when South Korea is trying to build strong ties with the new U.S. administration under President Donald Trump, while also facing a slowing economy.
