Abia, Sokoto, make history as National Handball Championship ends in Umuahia

The National Under-15 and Under-12 Handball Championship in Nigeria has come to an end, with Abia State making history. The tournament, held in Umuahia, saw Abia State emerge as champions in both the male and female Under-15 categories, winning the title for the first time.

In the Under-12 category, Sokoto State won the male competition, while Benue State claimed victory in the female category. The tournament brought together teams from 20 states across Nigeria and showcased young handball talents.

The championship was organized by the Abia State government in partnership with the Handball Federation of Nigeria. It took place from March 18 to March 28, aiming to promote peace, unity, and talent development in the country.

Speaking at the event, Abia State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Nwaobilor Ananaba, represented by Permanent Secretary Cyril Nwaigwe, emphasized how the tournament strengthened unity among Nigerians and helped discover future sports champions.

Abia State’s Director of Sports, Obioma George, highlighted that the event was part of Governor Alex Otti’s effort to revive handball in the state. Meanwhile, the Secretary General of the Handball Federation of Nigeria, Monica O., praised the tournament for boosting the growth of handball in Nigeria and discovering new talents.

Officials from Sokoto and Benue States also commended the Abia State government for providing top-notch security and organizing a successful competition.

The National Handball Championship has proven to be a great platform for nurturing young athletes and fostering unity through sports. With the success of this event, Nigeria’s handball scene looks set for a brighter future.
