Two killed, 10 injured in Abia gas factory explosion

A gas explosion at Inner Galaxy Steel Company in Asa, Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State, has killed two people and left ten others badly injured. The incident happened on Tuesday morning, March 25, 2025.

According to reports, the explosion was caused by a faulty gas valve, leading to severe damage inside the factory. The Abia State Police Command confirmed the incident on Thursday through its spokesperson, Maureen Chinaka.

The Mayor of Ukwa West LGA, Dike Briggs Nwankwo, also responded to the incident. He said that after hearing about the explosion, he immediately visited the factory to assess the damage.

“There were many different reports online, with some saying up to 20 people had died. I rushed to the scene and saw that the explosion had completely destroyed the roof in the affected area,” Nwankwo said.

He explained that CCTV footage reviewed by the factory’s management and local authorities showed the explosion happened while a customer was handling a gas cylinder valve.

“Twelve people were involved in the accident. Unfortunately, two lost their lives, while ten others are receiving treatment at a hospital in Port Harcourt. As of this morning, they are responding well to treatment,” he added.

Authorities are investigating the incident further to prevent such accidents in the future.
