Former Minister of Education, Obiageli Ezekwesili, has strongly criticized the Nigerian Senate for refusing to allow an independent investigation into allegations of sexual harassment made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Ezekwesili called Nigerian lawmakers “nation-destroyers” and accused them of acting with impunity. Her reaction came after The Economist reported on the difficult conditions women face in Nigerian politics, highlighting Akpoti-Uduaghan’s claims.
According to Ezekwesili, the Senate not only ignored the allegations but also tried to silence Natasha by suspending her for six months. Instead of addressing her complaint, she said the Senate launched a smear campaign against her.
She also accused the lawmakers of attempting to remove Natasha from office by bribing her constituents, but she noted that many of them rejected the offer.
Ezekwesili urged Nigerians to take action, warning that the Senate’s behavior is harming democracy. She insisted that citizens must stand up against such practices before they completely destroy the country.
