A women’s rights advocate based in the United States, Stella Okengwu, has said it looks like some senators are working against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
Okengwu made this statement after an event in the Senate where Natasha submitted a petition against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, accusing him of sexual harassment.
Senator Natasha, who represents Kogi Central, presented the petition during the Senate’s plenary session on Tuesday. She also accused Akpabio of abusing his position and trying to stop her from performing her duties.
However, Senate President Akpabio has denied all the allegations. Meanwhile, the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions dismissed Natasha’s petition, saying it had no merit.
Speaking in an interview with Channels Television, Okengwu strongly criticized the way the case was handled.
“What happened today is unacceptable,” she said. “It looks like the Senate is ganging up against Natasha. If the Senate President has been accused of sexual harassment, he should step aside and allow a proper investigation.”
Okengwu also pointed out that sexual abuse is a serious issue in Nigeria, and many women remain silent because they fear no one will listen to them. She recalled a past case involving Dino Melaye and the wife of Nigeria’s President, where inappropriate comments were made.
She insisted that Senator Natasha should be allowed to present her evidence, and no one, including the Senate President, should be above the law.
What do you think about this situation? Should the Senate President step aside while the investigation takes place?
