Lyon manager Paulo Fonseca has been suspended from matchday duties for nearly nine months after an intense confrontation with a referee during a Ligue 1 match.
Fonseca, 52, was sent off during Lyon’s 2-1 win over Brest on March 2. He reacted angrily to a referee’s decision, pushing his face close to official Benoit Millot in a heated exchange.
Following the incident, the French Professional Football League (LFP) announced that Fonseca cannot sit on the bench, enter the officials’ dressing room, or perform any official duties before, during, or after matches until November 30. Additionally, he is banned from the team’s dressing room, pitch, and surrounding areas until September 15.
Lyon strongly criticized the punishment, calling it “extremely severe and unprecedented.” The club expressed concerns about how quickly the decision was made. They also argued that Fonseca’s actions were emotional but not intended to harm the referee. The club is now exploring possible ways to appeal the decision.
Fonseca, who previously managed AC Milan, joined Lyon on January 31. He apologized for his actions after the match.
His suspension comes just before Lyon’s Europa League game against FCSB.
Referee Benoit Millot said Fonseca’s reaction was aggressive. He claimed the manager tried to headbutt him and made slight contact with his nose.
This controversy follows recent tensions in French football, with the referees’ union warning they may withdraw from matches if officials or their families face threats or abuse.
Lyon will now have to navigate the rest of the season without their head coach on the sidelines.
