A violent chieftaincy dispute in Nasarawa State has resulted in the deaths of two people and caused damage to several homes in the Odu electoral ward of Maraba Udege Development Area.
The conflict, which has been ongoing for over three years, is centered around a land ownership disagreement between the Afo people of Angwan Duse and Angwan Kasa communities.
Despite previous mediation attempts, the issue remains unresolved, leading to further violence. In response, Governor Abdullahi Sule visited the affected areas to assess the damage and work on finding a peaceful resolution.
During his visit, Governor Sule addressed the people from the Odu and Embu communities, urging them to end the violence.
He stressed the importance of stopping the destruction and loss of life, stating, “This crisis has lingered for too long. We must put an end to this senseless destruction.”
The governor also announced plans to appoint an administrator to manage the area and encourage peace efforts.
He called on the communities to view the Maraba Udege area as a shared heritage, urging them to put aside divisions for the sake of development.
Highlighting the area’s growing importance due to mining activities, Governor Sule emphasized the need for peace to unlock the region’s potential.
