Popular Nollywood actor turned politician, Kenneth Okonkwo, has shared his opinion on why many opposition politicians are moving to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). According to him, the politicians plan to use government institutions to rig the 2027 elections.
Okonkwo, who was the former spokesperson for the Obi/Datti Campaign Organization, said the APC would not receive any votes in a truly free and fair election. He made this statement during an interview on Arise TV on Monday.
The actor-turned-politician explained that the 2023 election results did not reflect what happened at the polling units across Nigeria. He believes the electoral process was flawed, making it hard for opposition parties to thrive in the country.
Okonkwo questioned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over its handling of the election results. He pointed out that INEC has not published the polling unit results as required by law under Section 62 of the Electoral Act.
He further accused defecting politicians of joining APC to secure the support of INEC and security agencies for the 2027 elections. Okonkwo emphasized that without free and fair elections, opposition parties would remain powerless.
The former APC member added that opposition politicians are not moving to APC because they want to, but because they believe they need the ruling party’s influence to win future elections. He argued that in a credible election, no one would support the APC.
Okonkwo concluded that democracy cannot survive without free, fair, and credible elections. He stressed that the focus should be on improving Nigeria’s electoral system to strengthen democracy.
