Ladi Adebutu, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the 2023 Ogun State governorship election, has been arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS). His arrest is related to incidents that took place during the recent local government elections in the state.
Adebutu is accused of bringing 40 police officers from MOPOL 49 in Lagos to Ogun State on the day of the election. He is also alleged to have been involved in violent acts in Ikenne local government area, where PDP supporters, riding motorcycles and carrying weapons, tried to seize ballot boxes.
Kayode Adebayo, the PDP’s publicity secretary, confirmed the arrest, though the exact charges against Adebutu remain unclear. Efforts to secure his release through bail or other means have not been successful as of Monday evening.
Adebayo called for calm, urging PDP members and supporters to remain peaceful as the situation unfolds. He assured the public that Adebutu had asked for patience, reminding everyone that challenges like this are a part of the democratic process.
