PDP Crisis: Why Damagum Was Suspended Instead of Being Sacked, According to Dino Melaye

Dino Melaye, a former senator from Kogi West, recently explained the situation surrounding Umar Damagum, the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In a post on X, Melaye clarified that the PDP suspended Damagum rather than sacking him. This decision was made to comply with a court order, showing the party’s commitment to following legal procedures.

Melaye wrote: “In compliance with the court order, not to sack Damagun, he has been suspended and not sacked. We have obeyed the court order because PDP is a law-abiding party.

“The suspension will aid in the resolution of the crisis in our party. Senator Dino Melaye.”

Melaye expressed optimism that suspending Damagum would help resolve the ongoing crisis within the PDP. Alongside Damagum, the party also suspended Debo Ologunagba, the National Publicity Secretary, and Kamaldeen Ajibade, the National Legal Adviser.

However, it’s important to note that a recent ruling from the Abuja Federal High Court has complicated matters. The court ordered that the PDP’s National Executive Committee and Board of Trustees cannot remove Damagum from his position. According to the court, only Damagum should be recognized as the acting national chairman until the party’s national convention is held in December next year.

This situation highlights the legal challenges facing the PDP and the importance of adhering to court rulings as the party navigates its internal issues. As the situation develops, the party hopes to find a resolution that will stabilize its leadership.
