A fresh political debate has emerged in Abia State after the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Emmanuel Emeruwa, revealed that a PDP lawmaker once supported colleagues financially. The Speaker named Erondu Uchenna Erondu Jr., who represents Obingwa West constituency, saying he often assisted fellow lawmakers when they faced financial challenges. The comment was made during a public event in Mgboko Umuanunu Ward 3, Obingwa Local Government Area.
Speaking partly in the Igbo language, Emeruwa said the PDP legislator was known for his compassion and generosity. According to him, Erondu would notice when lawmakers were struggling and step in to help with money. The Speaker recalled the early days of the Assembly, noting that members faced tough conditions at the time, which may have prompted such personal support among colleagues.
However, the statement has sparked mixed reactions across Abia’s political space. Opposition figures argue that the comment suggests lawmakers were poorly funded by the executive arm of government. They claim it raises questions about welfare provisions for legislators. On the other hand, supporters of the Speaker insist his remarks were not meant to accuse the government but were simply light-hearted comments made to entertain the crowd.
At the same gathering, former Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu used the opportunity to address a broader issue affecting Nigerians. He urged leaders at all levels to use public funds responsibly to fight hunger and hardship in society. His message added another layer to the event, shifting attention to accountability and the welfare of ordinary citizens.
