The All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party leader Peter Obi of failing to make meaningful sacrifices in the struggle to defend Nigeria’s democracy. The ruling party made the claim as political discussions around the 2027 general elections continue to gather momentum.
In a statement by party leaders, the APC argued that both Atiku and Obi have benefited from Nigeria’s democratic system without taking major personal or political risks to protect it during critical moments. The party insisted that true defenders of democracy are those who stood firm during difficult periods, even when it came at great personal cost.
The APC further maintained that its leaders and members have consistently shown commitment to democratic values, citing years of political struggle, opposition politics, and sacrifices made before gaining power at the federal level. According to the party, these efforts laid the foundation for the democratic space enjoyed today.
Reacting to the unfolding 2027 race, the APC urged Nigerians to carefully assess the democratic credentials of political actors beyond campaign promises. The party stressed that protecting democracy requires courage, consistency, and sacrifice, qualities it claimed are lacking in its political opponents.
