Why Abure’s Labour Party leadership was sacked

The leadership of the Labour Party under Julius Abure was removed following prolonged internal crises that threatened the stability and unity of the party. The decision came after months of disputes involving party executives, accusations of poor internal democracy, and disagreements over the handling of party affairs after the 2023 general elections.

One major reason cited for the sack was the deep division within the party’s leadership structure. Several party stakeholders accused the Abure-led executive of sidelining key members, ignoring court rulings, and failing to carry all tendencies along in decision-making. These issues reportedly weakened trust and created parallel structures within the party.

Another factor was the intervention of the courts and party elders, who raised concerns about the legitimacy of the leadership and the process that brought it to power. Some factions argued that the Abure leadership no longer had the moral or legal authority to continue, prompting calls for a caretaker arrangement to restore order.

With the sack, the Labour Party aims to reset its internal processes, reconcile aggrieved members, and rebuild confidence ahead of future elections. Party leaders insist the move is necessary to strengthen unity, promote transparency, and reposition the party for effective opposition politics in Nigeria.
