Why Tinubu didn’t cancel trip to South Africa, Angola despite killings in Nigeria

President Bola Tinubu proceeded with his planned trips to South Africa and Angola, even amid recent violent incidents in Nigeria that sparked public concern. Presidential aides explained that the trips were essential for diplomatic and economic engagements, including discussions on trade, investment, and regional security cooperation.

The presidency emphasized that mechanisms were in place to manage domestic security during Tinubu’s absence. Security agencies assured the public that ongoing investigations into the killings would continue uninterrupted, and measures were taken to prevent escalation while the president was abroad.

Political analysts note that international visits are crucial for strengthening Nigeria’s foreign relations and attracting investment, even during periods of domestic unrest. Cancelling such trips could have negatively affected Nigeria’s diplomatic standing and economic interests in Africa.

Critics, however, argued that the timing of the trips appeared insensitive given the scale of violence, urging the government to prioritize the safety and reassurance of citizens. The presidency responded by stressing the dual importance of maintaining national security and fulfilling international commitments.
