President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has charged the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited (NLNG) to intensify efforts to convert gas currently being flared into economic value for Nigerians.
Tinubu gave the charge on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, when he received the NLNG Board, led by its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Engineer Adeleye Falade, at the State House.
The President said NLNG’s priorities should extend beyond increasing revenue from international markets to maximising the domestic utilisation of Nigeria’s abundant gas resources.
“My major concern is the domestic utilisation, where you must be able to take out the flaring and convert potential environmental liability to what could be strategically and economically beneficial to the consumers in the country,” Tinubu said.
He commended NLNG for expanding its operational capacity and assured the company of the Federal Government’s readiness to provide incentives capable of driving further growth and investment.
Tinubu also called for greater domestic production of energy-related requirements and pricing mechanisms that would improve affordability and access for ordinary Nigerians.
Earlier, Falade disclosed that NLNG had generated more than $150 billion since its inception, with its shareholders, including the Federal Government, receiving about $47 billion in dividends. The Nigerian government holds a 49 per cent stake in the company.
According to him, NLNG had previously operated at about 60 per cent capacity because of inadequate crude oil production, restricting operations to four of its six available trains.
He said increased crude oil production had enabled the company to raise operations to five trains, with further improvements expected.
Falade also disclosed that NLNG was preparing to inaugurate Train Seven, which is expected to increase the company’s production capacity by 35 per cent. He added that the company currently accounts for about five per cent of the global LNG market.
The NLNG chief executive further revealed that all of the company’s Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, is currently supplied to the domestic market.
He also informed the President that the Bonny-Bodo Road and Bridge project, financed by NLNG, had been completed and was awaiting official commissioning.
The delegation included representatives of TotalEnergies, Nigeria Agip Exploration and other senior officials.
Also present at the meeting were Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris; Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga; and Senior Special Assistant to the President on Energy Transition, Yasmin Mohammed.
