NDLEA raises alarm over discovery of cannabis strain ‘California Loud’ in Lagos

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has raised serious concerns after discovering a powerful new type of cannabis called “California Loud” in Lagos. The revelation comes days after the agency busted a secret drug lab in Ajao Estate, Isolo, where a synthetic version of cannabis known as “Colorado” was being produced. During the raid, operatives arrested 30-year-old Stephen Imoh after months of undercover surveillance.

NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, speaking on TVC’s This Morning, explained that “California Loud” is far more potent than local cannabis varieties, making it particularly appealing to young users. He warned that the drug’s strength and intense effects pose a serious public health risk. “It’s a major challenge, and everyone — families, communities, and authorities — must work together to stop its spread,” he said.

On the synthetic drug lab discovery, Babafemi described Colorado as extremely dangerous due to the chemical process used in its production. He noted that THC, a component of cannabis, is mixed with harmful chemicals, making the substance even more hazardous. The suspect arrested at the lab reportedly suffered visible chemical burns and peeling skin, showing the dangers tied to handling such toxic substances.

Despite multiple raids and arrests nationwide, drug trafficking and abuse continue to grow in Nigeria. Youth involvement has become a major concern, with authorities urging parents, schools and communities to intensify awareness and prevention efforts to protect young people from drug dangers.

NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd.) has reassured Nigerians that the agency will continue to crackdown on drug cartels. He said the NDLEA is committed not only to arresting offenders but also to dismantling drug networks and seizing illegal profits to weaken criminal operations across the country.
