Those who defile minors face life imprisonment as Senate passes new law

The Nigerian Senate has approved a new law prescribing life imprisonment for anyone found guilty of defiling minors. The bill, which aims to strengthen the protection of children against sexual abuse, was passed during plenary on Tuesday after extensive debate by lawmakers.

The new legislation amends existing criminal laws to ensure that offenders who sexually exploit children face tougher punishment. According to the Senate, the move is necessary to deter rising cases of child sexual abuse across the country. The bill also provides measures to protect victims and ensure speedy prosecution of offenders.

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, Senator Mohammed Monguno, said the bill was a response to public outcry over the increasing rate of sexual violence against minors. He explained that previous penalties were too lenient and failed to serve as a deterrent to potential offenders.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended his colleagues for the unanimous support, saying the new law demonstrates the government’s commitment to upholding the rights of children. He urged state governments and law enforcement agencies to ensure full enforcement once the bill becomes law.

Human rights groups and child protection advocates have welcomed the decision, describing it as a victory for Nigerian children. They, however, stressed the need for continuous awareness campaigns and stronger collaboration between parents, schools, and communities to prevent abuse before it happens.
