The Federal Government has delivered the first batch of electric vehicles promised to civil servants as part of its broader plan to promote cleaner and more sustainable transportation in Nigeria.

The development was announced on Wednesday following a meeting between the Director-General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), Joseph Osanipin, and President Bola Tinubu.

Osanipin said the delivery marks the beginning of a wider initiative to provide more civil servants with electric vehicles while developing the charging infrastructure required to support their use across the country.

He disclosed that the government had already established electric vehicle infrastructure in about 16 universities as part of efforts to promote local research, innovation and development in the sector.

The government is also accelerating the transition to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as an alternative fuel for vehicles, a move that requires expanded infrastructure, including gas stations, mobile refuelling units and production facilities.

According to Osanipin, the private sector is increasingly investing in the CNG market, with the number of companies licensed to sell gas rising from about four to 81.

He said the sharp increase demonstrates growing private-sector confidence in the CNG industry and the opportunities created by the Federal Government’s ongoing energy transition initiatives.
