Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera has officially conceded defeat in the just-concluded presidential election, marking the end of his tenure. Chakwera, who became president in 2020 after a historic court-ordered rerun, congratulated the winner and urged Malawians to remain united as the country transitions into a new era.
In his address, he acknowledged the will of the people and emphasized that true democracy is measured by the ability of leaders to respect the outcome of elections. He also called on citizens to give their full support to the incoming administration for the sake of peace and progress.
The concession is being seen as a major boost for Malawi’s democracy, as smooth transitions of power strengthen institutions and build confidence in the electoral system.
