Police reportedly used tear gas on protesting students and staff of FCE Akoka, leading to the arrest of 32 individuals (videos included).

There was chaos on Monday, July 29, at the Federal College of Education (Technical) Akoka, Lagos, as police allegedly used tear gas on protesting staff and students. The protesters were demonstrating against the provost, Dr. Wahab Azeez, accusing him of unlawfully extending his tenure.

A witness named Tomisin shared photos and videos from the scene, showing the intense situation. In a social media post, Tomisin reported, “Emergency Alert. There are reports of police shooting and tear gas being used on students at Akoka Road. This is happening during ongoing protests. Please help spread the word.”

The police spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident, stating that 32 people were arrested. He explained that the staff and students attacked a Ministry of Education team from Abuja, sent to resolve the issue. The team’s vehicles and the provost’s quarters were damaged during the attack.

“For over three months, staff of the Federal College of Education (Technical), Akoka have locked out their Provost, preventing him from using his office. A team set up by the Minister of Education arrived at the school to mediate the ongoing conflict,” he said.

However, the team from Abuja was attacked by the staff and students, who damaged more than five vehicles and the provost’s official residence. The rioters also blocked all entrances to the college.

“The police arrived at the scene and restored order after being attacked with stones and sachets of water by the rioters,” Hundeyin added. “Thirty-two suspects have been arrested, and the police from Area Command, Surulere remain on site to maintain peace.”
